Learning the “Hardest Language in the World’’ Can Be Intimidating

 

 

 

I’ve talked to so many people who really want to learn Chinese, but most of them are struggling.

They say things like:

“All the words sound the same’’, or 

 

“I can’t hear the tones; I must be tone-deaf!’’

 

And then there are the thousands of characters to learn if you want to read and write Mandarin.

Learning Chinese can indeed seem like an impossible task.

 

The U.S. State Department’s Foreign Service Institute can confirm this. 

 

They created a list of the languages that are the hardest to learn which included Mandarin as one of the most difficult languages for English speakers.

 

That’s why so many learners get overwhelmed and give up after a while.

I Was a Language Idiot Until I Realized This...

 

 

Yes, I was a total language idiot in high school. 

 

I took Latin, Hebrew, and Greek classes but every year I felt like I was learning the same thing over and over again. Every year I would have to rummage back through the dictionary to look up the exact same words I looked up the year before. 

 

I kept thinking to myself, I wonder when any of this stuff is going to stick. (Tell me if that sounds familiar!) 

 

To this day I don’t remember anything from any of these classes. 


Growing up in NYC I only spoke English. But my dad would take me to Chinatown when I was little and man, it was the coolest thing! 

 

The lights, smells, tastes — it was just wild. I dreamed about someday being able to speak this amazing, intricate, seemingly exotic language, but I never actually thought it was possible to get fluent.

 

And the first Chinese courses I took in college did little to dispel this idea. I found the Chinese language beautiful but oh-so frustrating.

- Why did 了 work like that?
- What the heck was the little square next to 吗?
- And how do you just say “bring me that pencil” already?! 


I felt so confused by teaching materials that were totally irrelevant for beginners. 

 

My teachers would try to explain tiny details about the writing system that didn't make any sense because I didn't have any idea how the language actually worked!

 

Later I got the opportunity to study Chinese at a university in China, but even then I mostly became fluent outside of the classroom, not during the lessons!

Going to a language school can be a good way to keep yourself motivated and accountable but…

 

Don’t forget that in the end you have to learn by yourself.

 

Nobody can learn a language for you.

 

That’s the cold, hard truth!

The Trick to Learn Conversational Chinese Fast 

(I stole it from babies)

 

 

Traditional schools and textbooks often focus a lot on first teaching the alphabet, the tones, colors, numbers, and all that.

 

Even popular apps like Duolingo use this approach.

 

You need to watch out here because although it might feel that you can learn fast this way, this is not how people learn languages in the real world.

 

Just look at how babies learn languages.

 

The first thing mothers say to their kids is not a list of numbers and days of the week, but it’s something like “do you want more milk?’’ or “here, you can eat this.’’

 

They use short and simple sentences.

 

As the child grows up and starts speaking, the words and sentences parents use become gradually longer and more difficult.

 

That’s how people learn naturally.

 

They do NOT teach the alphabet, the numbers, or grammar first.

 

I call this the method “Pattern Hacking” and it also works really well for adults.

 

 

The Magic of “Pattern Hacking’’

Here’s how it works;
 

I usually focus on words and simple sentences that I can immediately start using with people in the street. Think about simple phrases like:

  • Do you speak Chinese?

  • I am learning Chinese

  • I want to go to the market

  • How much is this?

  • It’s tasty!

These are things that I know I need to say if I want to have a basic conversation with random people in the street or in restaurants, so that’s what I focus on.

 

Then I ask a friend or a tutor to translate the phrases and even record the audio. I put them into a flashcard app called Anki and I use that app to learn the phrases by heart. These days I often shortcut the process by having a conversation in my target language...

 

Every. Single. Day.

 

I can hear you thinking: “But I want to learn to create my own sentences…’’

 

Fair enough.

 

The reality is that when you’re learning these kinds of phrases you’re not just learning words, you’re learning patterns of speech.

 

When you know how to say “I want to go to China’’ it’s pretty straightforward to learn how to say “I want to go to the market.’’

 

So yes, you’re learning useful, short sentences, but the greatest thing about this approach is that you’re also learning grammar and patterns of speech without even realizing it!

 

Once you know some of the most important words and you understand how the language works, you will be ready to create your own sentences and hold your first conversations!
